Jim Stanley, a program manager at Linde and one of the paper's authors stated in a release that the benefits of CO2 include high efficiency, low investment costs, easy installation, and strong results. In addition, use of CO2 in spot cooling can cut the cost of molded parts and creates additional molding capacity.

Linde says its CO2 spot-cooling technology is used to supplement to water cooling, where it's applied to mold sections where conventional water cooling is not feasible. Liquid CO2 flows under high pressure through small tubes to where cooling is required. "The CO2 expansion cools the mold, and the newly gaseous carbon dioxide leaves the cavity through exhaust channels," Linde states on its site.
