The current 5-Series has been around for eight years, meaning a replacement is due any day. With it, a new M5. Prototypes are already out testing at the Nürburgring, giving us our first hints of what the high-performance sedan might look like.
Instagram user joelre98 spotted this heavily camouflaged M5 prowling around the roads surrounding the Green Hell last week. In a short video, we can see the car sporting some noticeably enlarged front fenders, allowing room for a wider front tire—exactly what you'd want for more front-end grip and overall performance. As BMW Blog points out, you can also see a curved display in the cabin if you pause the video and zoom in.
BMW has yet to confirm any specs for the upcoming seventh-gen M5, though if the sticker on the door of this test mule is to be believed, it'll come with hybrid power. Rumors suggest that electric energy will be connected to a twin-turbo V-8, similar to the powertrain found in the XM crossover. It makes sense, though we recommend taking this info with a grain of salt.
There's no word on when BMW plans to reveal the new 5-Series and subsequently, the M5. A quick estimation of timelines puts an unveiling at early next year, though. So we'll likely have to wait until 2023 to see the finished product.
